ANALYSIS OF CONJUGATE HEAT TRANSFER IN A CYLINDER WITH A UNIFORM HEAT SINK

The complex heat transfer process taking place during slow depressurization of a pressure vessel due to the enthalpy loss by gas release is simulated by a uniform heat sink in the gas. The paper describes the numerical simulation of transient conjugate heat transfer in a horizontal cylinder with a volumetric heat sink, using the ASTEC code. The numerical predictions have revealed some interesting phenomena, including the generation of non-symmetric motions. A simple analytical model is also derived, yielding the variation of the average fluid and wall temperatures with time. The parameters controlling the heat transfer processes are identified. The numerical results are used to estimate the average heat transfer coefficient.
